Soon the untidy pile of out of date brochures are replaced by a bespoke Ford display cabinet, prospects are safely organised in a card index system and there are"fine photographs of Dagenham" on the walls. This is a fascinating insight into branding and sales, 1930s style.

The "Concordia" trading company in Würzburg is a secret headquarters of the MID, a secret service agency of the US Army. For years, espionage, sabotage, and diversion operations originated from here in order to undermine the Socialist Republic of Germany. A favorable moment for a military attack approaches and plans are developed. These plans are placed in the hands of Major Collins, who keeps them in a safe. Hansen has worked for him for many years, but also for the Stasi as a double agent. Security Chief Colonel Rock knows there is a leak, but Hansen has passed every test thrown at him. He is trying to deal with his current assignment: acquiring the plans so they can be made public.

The director of the company gives up his New Year's prize trip to the Balearic Islands to a deserving clerk, Milorad Petrović. The trip is for two people, but Milorad is separating from his wife, has no friends, and has never taken a vacation, which leads to his problems. He also fails to notice a female colleague who likes him as a woman. The story gains a special charm as it unfolds in the atmosphere of the New Year's festivities.

Dr. Josef Rittenhaus, a popular young society physician of Vienna, at the behest of his friend Waldstein, goes to consider a proposal by Countess von Nessa to donate a site and funds for the erection of a new sanitarium. His wife, Laura, piqued by his apparent indifference, is left in the hands of Carl Tanzer, supposedly the doctor's best friend, whose advances she rejects. Laura contrives to make her husband jealous with a bogus letter, but to no avail; later, escaping from a masher, she meets her husband's friend Fritz Schwerman, from whom she escapes after accepting a luncheon offer. While Laura tries to vamp her husband's other friends at a card game, the countess tries to make love to the doctor. Rittenhaus returns home in disgust and is happily reconciled with his wife.
